- Description: It is called glycine. In a sleep study, people on it fell asleep faster and reached deep sleep sooner.

Three grams of glycine before bed got people into deep sleep sooner. The likely reason is heat.

To fall asleep and then drop into slow-wave sleep, your core temperature needs to fall. That heat leaves through your skin, mostly through your hands and feet.

In rats, glycine drives that handoff. It acts on NMDA receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the brain’s master clock, and blood vessels in the skin open up.

Heat leaves, core temperature drops, and the brain reads the drop as clearance to go deep. That chain was mapped in animals, so treat it as the likely explanation for what happens in you.

Slow-wave sleep is where the sleep pressure built up during the day gets paid down. Getting there sooner is the best guess for why the morning after looked different.

---

The study, published in Sleep and Biological Rhythms in 2007, gave 3 grams of glycine at bedtime to 11 adults who had slept badly for a long time. Eight were women, and the group ranged from 30 to 57.

Overnight brain recordings showed they fell asleep faster and reached slow-wave sleep sooner. The mix of sleep stages stayed the same.

The next day they felt less sleepy and scored better on a memory recognition test. That is the fog, tested the morning after.

This is small, early evidence. Several of the authors worked for Ajinomoto, a company that makes glycine, and the study did not measure body temperature.

💡

****Tonight:** Stir 3 grams of glycine powder into a few ounces of water and drink it as your last hour begins, roughly an hour before lights out. Capsules usually hold 500 milligrams or 1 gram, so check the label and count.

Keep the bedroom cool so the heat has somewhere to go. Glycine opens the exit, and a warm room slows the escape.

> Your core has to lose heat before deep sleep starts. Three grams in the last hour helps it let go.

Glycine at this dose is generally well tolerated, though a few people report an upset stomach or drowsiness. Skip it if you take clozapine, and ask your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
