Your nightcap is costing you the first three hours of the night

Two or three drinks cut overnight recovery by 24 points. Even one moved the number.

Two or three drinks in the evening cut the time your body spends in recovery during the first three hours of sleep by 24 percentage points. That comes from 4,098 people wearing heart monitors through the night, more than half of them women.

Even one drink moved the number. The lowest level, roughly one standard drink for most women, cut it by 9.3 points.

Recovery here has a precise meaning. It is the share of time your nervous system spends in its rest-and-recover mode, read from the tiny shifts in timing between heartbeats.

When that mode is running, the gap between beats varies more. Your heart rate drifts down.

Alcohol flipped that. At the moderate level, heart rate in those first hours rose by 4 beats per minute and beat-to-beat variation fell by 5.7 milliseconds. Both in the wrong direction.

The likely reason is simple. Your body is still clearing the alcohol, and the alert side of your nervous system stays switched on while it works.

That is what the morning drag can look like from the inside. Eight hours in bed, and the first three spent on watch.

The study, published in JMIR Mental Health in 2018, followed Finnish employees aged 19 to 65. Researchers compared each person's nights after drinking with their own alcohol-free nights, which strips out most of the differences between people.

The heart rate and beat-to-beat effects were similar in women and men. Every step up in dose made them worse, and at the highest level recovery time fell by 39.2 points.

One limit matters here. The study recorded how much people drank that day, not exactly when, so the dose is the part of this finding to hold onto.

Tonight, make the last hour alcohol-free. If you drink this evening at all, stop at one, and let sparkling water with lime be what you pour after dinner.

The drink closest to bed is the one most likely to still be in your system when you lie down. That makes it the first one to cut.

One drink, 9 points. Two or three, 24. Your heart keeps that score for the first three hours of the night.
